Background information on the art of “Pysanka” :

It was the tradition of Luba Petrushka’s Ukrainian ancestors to celebrate the coming of spring with a great holiday, Velykden. It was the celebration of a new year and of new life. They sang spring songs, baked special breads, feasted on wonderful things, and decorated eggs, both simple colored ones, and the more intricate ones known as pysanky.

Above is a photo of the eggs she made last spring. They are mostly traditional designs, from various regions of Ukraine. She has taken most of them from Zenon Elyjiw’s “60 Score of Ukrainian Easter Eggs,” and a good number from Vira Manko’s “Ukrainian Folk Pysanka.”
